How to convert Excel invoices to Tally
TallyPrime uses a two-file import process. You must create the Masters (ledgers and stock items) before the Vouchers that reference them — otherwise Tally reports "referenced master is missing".
This converter reads your spreadsheet, groups rows by Voucher No into one voucher each, decides CGST+SGST vs IGST based on the seller state you choose vs the buyer's GSTIN state code, and builds both XML files ready to import.
Minimum columns needed: Voucher Date, Voucher No, Party Name, Taxable Amount, GST Rate %. Adding Party GSTIN enables automatic intra/inter-state GST split.
Excel to Tally converter — FAQ
Why two files — Masters and Vouchers?
TallyPrime imports one purpose per file. Vouchers reference ledger and stock-item names that must already exist in the company. The Masters file creates those ledgers and stock items; the Vouchers file then posts the actual transactions. Always import Masters first, then Vouchers.
What columns does my spreadsheet need?
At minimum: Voucher Date, Voucher No, Party Name, Taxable Amount, and GST Rate %. Recommended additions: Party GSTIN (determines intra/inter-state automatically), Party State (fallback), Stock Item, HSN/SAC code, Quantity, Rate per unit. Any extra columns are ignored.
How does the converter decide CGST/SGST vs IGST?
It compares your seller state (configured in Step 3) against the buyer's state. If the buyer's GSTIN is present, it reads the first two digits as the state code. If no GSTIN is present, it compares the Party State name. Same state → CGST + SGST (each at half the rate). Different states → IGST (at the full rate).
Is this converter free? Does it store my data?
Yes — free with a Quillix login, up to 15 conversions a month. All processing happens in your browser using JavaScript. No invoice data is ever sent to any server. The generated XML files are created and downloaded locally on your device.
